Abstract

The present study aims to identify the positive orientation toward the self among university students. The research sample includes university students of both genders from various academic disciplines (scientific and humanistic), and different academic levels for the academic year (2024–2025). To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher constructed a scale to measure the positive orientation toward the self. The scale, in its final form, consisted of (38) items.

After applying the scale to a stratified sample of (454) male and female students, selected proportionally from faculties in Al-Rusafa Second District in Baghdad Governorate, appropriate statistical methods were employed. The researcher verified the psychometric properties of the scale by applying it to the research sample. Reliability was established using multiple statistical methods, including test-retest reliability and internal consistency (Cronbach's Alpha).

The results revealed a statistically significant correlation between the positive orientation toward the self and both variables under study (academic major and gender). The findings showed that university students generally possess a positive orientation toward the self. The study concluded with a set of recommendations, including the importance of designing educational programs by the Ministry of Higher Education, faculty members, and academic advisors aimed at enhancing positive self-orientation among university students.
